About Eschen Chess Club

Our story

Eschen lies in Liechtenstein’s Unterland, north of Vaduz along the Alpine Rhine. Like many Rhein‑Valley communities here, local life runs through municipalities, sports clubs (Vereine), and school halls that double as meeting rooms — a familiar pattern across the Principality’s small towns.

Eschen Chess Club traces its origins to informal Vereinsabend games in the 1990s, when neighbours began meeting after work with boards borrowed from schools and the Gemeinschaftsraum. What started as a handful of clocks and score sheets grew into structured internal leagues mixing rapid rounds on weeknights and longer classical evenings before holidays.

Today the club anchors two rhythms: competitive adults who sharpen openings for tournaments in neighbouring Switzerland and Vorarlberg, and a youth strand held Sunday mornings near Schulhaus Eschen, where juniors learn notation and etiquette before graded play. Rated events elsewhere in the Principality typically follow handbook time‑control norms; organisers keep the same conventions for Eschen‑hosted opens so travellers know what to expect.

Milestones (illustrative)

  • Late 1980s — ad‑hoc gatherings in Unterland workplaces and cafés introduce a regular Thursday board.
  • 1996 — first internal round‑robin at the community centre (Gemeindehaus Eschen), pairings handwritten.
  • 2009 — youth afternoons formalised with school cooperation; parental volunteers rotate supervision.
  • 2020 onwards — live pairings kiosk and this portal supplement paper bulletins.

About this website

The portal records over‑the‑board results and publishes club announcements. Staff enter finished games in Django admin so club ratings update instantly; adaptive K‑factors mirror common Elō practice on long ladder histories.

Optional Lichess imports and engine-backed views run on background workers — ask the technical lead if you administer infrastructure. Staff MFA: enroll a TOTP device on your Django user inside /admin/.
